MP James Murray Visits Vicar’s Eco Team
Before the half-term break, we were thrilled to welcome our local MP, James Murray, to Vicar’s Green Primary School to meet our amazing Eco Team and learn about the fantastic work they’ve been doing to promote environmental awareness across our school. We were also delighted to be joined by our school governor, Asad Choudhury, who took part in the visit and showed great support for the pupils' efforts.
Mr Murray spent time with the Eco Team as they proudly shared some of their key achievements this year. These included: leading the school’s involvement in Earth Hour, Earth Day and organising a successful Outdoor Learning Week.
He also joined the pupils for a question and answer session, where they asked thoughtful questions about environmental policies and learned more about the government’s plans to protect the planet. The discussion left the pupils full of new ideas about how they can continue to make a difference.
One of the highlights shared during the visit was the transformation of our school garden—an idea that started with the Eco Team. What began as a small project soon grew into something much bigger, inspiring pupils, staff and parents to get involved. Led by Miss Beczko, with support from Deputy Headteacher Mrs Simpson and Mr Brennan, who runs the weekly Gardening Club, the garden has become a vibrant, sustainable space. It now includes compost bins, bug hotels, bird feeders, wind chimes, and areas where children grow fruits, herbs and vegetables. It has become a wonderful space for exploring biodiversity and learning about how to care for the environment.
A special moment during the visit was when Mr Murray joined members of the Eco Team to plant kalanchoe flowering plants, which symbolise resilience, joy, and optimism. These beautiful flowers now stand proudly in our garden as a symbol of our shared commitment to looking after the world around us.
Mr Murray said about his visit: “I was very glad to meet the pupils in the Eco Team at Vicar's Green Primary School, and to hear about their excellent work in the local environment. I enjoyed answering all their questions and having the chance to speak about my work in Parliament on issues including air quality, as well as the Government’s mission to deliver clean power in Britain. I would like to send a big thank you to all the pupils, staff, and school governors for their warm welcome and for an educational and inspiring visit to the school.”
