Message from the Head Teacher
On Tuesday this week, we welcomed senior leaders from three local primary schools and one secondary school to observe the teaching of writing across Vicar's Green. Writing is one of the key priorities in our School Improvement Plan, and it is always valuable to have colleagues from other schools visit us and provide a fresh perspective on our practice.
Visitors recognised the strong progression in writing skills across the school, particularly through our carefully sequenced lessons and opportunities for independent writing at the end of each unit. They also commented positively on the strong oracy skills of our children, noting how pupils confidently use ambitious vocabulary in both speech and writing.
The effective deployment of teaching assistants was also highlighted, especially in supporting children during lessons and through the pre-teaching of writing skills for focus groups.
As part of the review, we identified next steps to further strengthen our practice, including making greater use of working walls to support vocabulary choices and examples of high-quality writing, alongside ensuring children have more opportunities for meaningful feedback and editing to refine their final pieces of work.
Beyond the writing focus, our visitors commented very positively on the wider environment of the school. In particular, they praised the high standards of displays throughout the building, showcasing ambitious and creative artwork produced by our pupils. They also spoke highly of our Sunshine Alley provision, including the specialist support area and sensory space, recognising the nurturing environment it provides for children across the school community.
